Eropah

A wonderful journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.

As requested by many, here is the detailed itinerary & cost. There are more experiences which I can share however, it could be hard for the reader to digest at once so do let me know if you have more questions.

Hope this benefits for those who wanna travel to Europe in future. Feel free to save or share the itinerary and no approval is needed. I just wish everyone got the chance travel to Europe soon.

My journey starts here.

17th June: KL – Abu Dhabi

Flight (Kul to Abu Dhabi) : 7 hours.

  • Reached Abu Dhabi & 11 hours transit for next flight.
  • Malaysian may visit Abu Dhabi without Visa for 30 days. Cross check the requirements in future, it is very important.
  • Planned to visit Burj Khalifa. Bought sim & paid for rental car online. However, the car security payment itself AED 3,000 hence we canceled (non-refundable) it. The security payments will only be released after 10 days so we didn’t wanna lock huge amount as we’re renting car in Europe too. Taxi cost Rm800 for 2 ways to Burj Khalifa so we skipped it as we might plan to Dubai in future.
  • Just went for supper outside airport and waited for next connecting flight.
Etihad Airways
Abu Dhabi International Airport

18th June: Abu Dhabi – Istanbul

Flight (Abu Dhabi to Istanbul) : 5 hours.

  • Reached Istanbul airport, bought sim & rented car. Drivers in Istanbul drives on the right-hand side of the road, similar to Europe.
  • Otw to hotel we hit a car’s side mirror & paid for settlement. Just prepare for any unforeseen situations whenever you’re in a new place.
  • Checked-in hotel, refreshed and went out for dinner & sightseeing.
  • Next is our car’s side mirror was broke. Probably someone hit & run in the midnight at the parking so we don’t dare to drive the next day.

19th June: Istanbul

  • Visited Topkapi Palace Museum, Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia. All 3 places are just nearby walking distances.
  • We used BiTaksi app which is similar to Grab in MY and it’s cheaper too.

20th June: Istanbul – Amsterdam

  • Flight (Istanbul to Amsterdam) : 3 hours 30 mins.
  • Bought SIM card & rented car in the airport.
  • Checked-in Airbnb, refreshed & spent the whole day at Damrak & Amsterdam Central.
  • The parking in Amsterdam is pricey which could cost up to EUR 40 for 5 hours.

21st June: Amsterdam

  • Visited Zaanse Schans, Giethoorn & Amsterdam Central.

22nd June: Amsterdam – Bruges

  • Visited Amsterdam central & left to Bruges.
  • Checked-in Airbnb, refreshed & visited Bruges.

USEFUL TIPS FOR ME *but we still make mistakes

  1. Make sure your travel partners are easy going & not so demanding as there could be always some unforeseen situations throughout the trip.
  2. Check the local requirements for Covid test & quarantine before visiting any countries. Luckily by the time we visited, all the requirements were lifted in all 5 countries. This could change from time to time so do check before the actual departure.
  3. All the accommodations was booked through Airbnb as it’s way cheaper & spacious than hotels. However, most of the cheaper Airbnb located at least 40mins away from the main attractions so if you’re not driving then you might consider booking hotels nearby the attractions or at least where the public transports are connected.
  4. Most of the attraction tickets can be bought through Klook including car reservation for Europe. If you’re planning to use public transport, you may consider hop-on hop-off bus or the day passes for any intercity traveling. While FlixBus & Omio for traveling between countries.
  5. The car booking was done earlier in May through Klook where no front-end payments required. However, if it’s done through any other websites, we need to pay booking payments. Also our return flight is from Amsterdam because we need to return the car from the same place we collected.
  6. As it’s summer in Europe, the sun sets only at 10pm. The malls, restaurants & ticketing counter of attractions will be closed by 6pm. By 7pm the places will be super quiet. As a Malaysian it’s hard to survive after 6pm without restaurants where in Malaysia we have Mamak’s for 24 hours. Long Live Mamak!
  7. If you’re landing & departing from Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) please prepare for disappointment. During our landing we stayed for 3 hours inside the airport because they don’t have enough staffs. During our departure, we was there 5 hours earlier and only reached the boarding gate just 15 mins before the flight take-off. Worst airport management ever. You can see tourist complains about this airport most of the times.
  8. Do have the itineraries and proof of bookings in place at the immigration. I had it printed so when the immigration officer in Schiphol Airport requested for proof, I showed the printed bookings confirmation.
  9. We only changed RM1,000 each to local currencies (AED – Rm200), TRY (Rm200) & EUR (Rm600)) as a backup & used BigPay mostly.
  10. Always have some backups as not all places can accept BigPay. For example, the car rental company in Europe declined Bigpay and luckily I had my Maybank credit card as backup. Similarly in Cologne, transactions was declined through BigPay with few merchants, luckily we had some cash in EUR.
  11. To drive in Europe, you need International driving license. However, do bring your Malaysian driving license as they will think we only gotten our driving license recently based on the date from International driving license which could be issued recently.
  12. If your Malaysian driving license was renewed recently too, then do bring expired Malaysian driving license too. (Soft copies are fine too).
  13. Don’t think about driving in Istanbul.
  14. If you’re Asian then definitely you need to bring wet wipes for toilet use. Even in the hotels/Airbnb you shouldn’t (mostly) wet the toilet floor.
  15. You need to pay to use the public toilets. It could range between EUR 0.50 cents to EUR 1.
  16. Check the countries driving requirements. For example, all cars need a green badge to enter Cologne where we wasn’t aware till we drove to Cologne. We took the risk to drive without it, however if get caught could be fined up till EUR 80.
